Jaguar predatory habits

As you might have guessed I am a tech believer. I think edge technology has a lot to offer to protect our world. However, small things can make a big difference. One of the most common issues regarding Jaguars (#Yaguaretés as we call them here) is what people call “the human-Jaguar clash”.

We are pushing wildlife to small spots on the map and while doing so we are establishing farms with domestic animals near them, the situation is obvious, the lack of natural prey forces Jaguars to attack domestic animals. The response from some farmers is not the best, they can kill Jaguars to protect their private property. I am not going to judge that behavior, what I want to point out is that Jaguars are scarce and they represent an opportunity instead of a problem. Jaguars are magnificent and mysterious animals that catch the attention, thus, and besides the role they play and their right to exist, they are a big revenue stream for the tourism industry and local communities.

As every person has its own goals, sometimes a little collaboration can achieve great results to minimize conflicts. I tend not to do this, however I saw the marvelous campaign from Jaguars in the fringe (See the links page) and I wanted to share it here with you. These are small things that can make a huge difference for all of us. The drawings were made with huge talent, love and empathy by Soledad Candia and Teresa Fuertes. A big thank you to Juan Reppucci for allowing me to replicate this campaign here.

Not Stupid

Not Stupid

Jaguars are smart, the presence of another brave animal will make them think twice before attacking.

Keep them away

Do not leave dead domestic animals where Jaguars can find them, they can get used to eat domestic animals. Bury your dead animals.

Strenght aware

Strenght aware

Do not shoot Jaguars, you could kill them or injure them. An injured Jaguar will notice his weakness and could go for smaller prey like your dog. The problem could get worse.
